DIY Painted Pegboard

Add a Pop of Color to Your Workspace with This Fun & Functional Project!

Joy is at the heart of everything we do, especially when it comes to the moments we create together as a family. With Miya growing her collection of handmade crochet products, I knew I needed an affordable way to keep it all organized. I was lucky enough to score a slightly used pegboard from Joann Fabric on their very last day open (a bittersweet moment for sure), and I thought...why not make it a little special?

With Miya on summer break, it turned into the perfect project for me and my two daughters. It was made with love, laughter and, of course, a little bit of paint everywhere.

Was it perfect? Not at all. But it was perfectly us.

We spent the afternoon taping, painting, giggling, and picking colors that made us smile. The end result is something we’re incredibly proud of, not just because it’s functional and fun, but because it’s a reflection of our happy chaos, our creativity, and the bond we share.

How To Paint a Geometric Patterned Peg Board

Supplies Needed

  • 1 large pegboard panel

  • Acrylic paint in a mix of bright, happy colors

  • Painter’s tape (We used Frogtape for Gloss and Satin)

  • Paint brushes in various sizes (including a few handled by tiny hands!)

  • Hooks, baskets, or pegs for organizing

  • Hanging hardware (optional if mounting)

Directions

  1. Step 1: Tape Off a Geometric Design

We used painter’s tape to randomly section off parts of the pegboard into geometric shapes. There was no plan - just play! The kids helped press the tape down on the edges to ensure it did not bleed, and we loved how spontaneous it turned out.

  2. Step 2: Paint With Joy

Each taped-off shape got its own color. Some sections were neat, others had a little more "personality" (thank you, toddler hands!), but that’s what made it special. We painted, we laughed, and we may have ended up with more paint on ourselves than the board.

  3. Step 3: Peel the Tape

We carefully peeled the tape off while the paint was still a bit tacky to get those satisfying clean lines. And yes, some spots needed a little touch-up, but that was part of the fun!

  4. Step 4: Let It Dry

We let the board dry completely overnight, giving it a few extra hours just to be safe.

  5. Step 5: Add Hooks and Organize

Once dry, we added hooks and baskets to hold all of Miya’s colorful products. At the top was to store my overstock of ribbon and other craft items, but near the bottom, I placed Miya's scrunchies, keychains, hairclips, and more so that it was easily accessible for her. Now everything has a place, and it’s all displayed in a way that feels like us.

Why We Loved This Project

This pegboard is more than just a pretty organizational tool, it’s a piece of our story. It holds Miya’s creations and our memories, all in one colorful display. It reminds us that creating together is what really brings joy into our lives and our space.

Whether you’re looking for a fun way to organize or a weekend project to do with your littles, this one’s a keeper.
