Capturing San Francisco's Unique Coastal Trees in Clay

If you’ve ever walked along the coast of San Francisco, especially near Ocean Beach, you’ve probably noticed the uniquely twisted trees that seem to grow in all sorts of strange shapes. These fascinating trees are a product of thigmotropism—a natural response where plants grow in reaction to physical touch, like the coastal winds shaping them over time. There’s something oddly beautiful about them, and they’ve always caught my eye.

One such tree, located at the corner of Noriega & the Great Highway in the Sunset District, has always stood out to me. Its quirky form and character make it a local landmark I can’t help but smile at every time I pass by. That’s why, when I decided to work on my latest clay art project, I knew I had to capture the charm of this tree in a piece that would reflect its unique beauty.

Below are photos of my inspiration for this project. Taken just minutes apart, these shots show how quickly the sky and fog can change in San Francisco, and they perfectly capture the dynamic beauty that influenced the mood and texture of my clay art piece.

I’m excited to share that I’ve just completed this DIY clay art piece, and it’s now proudly hanging in my crafting room. My son saw me working on it over the weekend, and I could tell he was curious about the process. But when he came home from school and saw it hanging up, the look of excitement on his face was priceless. He said, "That looks so good, mommy!"—and that simple moment made this project even more special to me.

Creating this piece was all about honoring the weird, wonderful trees that make San Francisco’s coastal landscape so distinctive. Whether you’re a Sunset District local or someone who loves crafting with a touch of oddness, this DIY clay project is for you. It’s a great way to celebrate the beauty of San Francisco art and create something meaningful for your home.
