DIY Embossed Clay Bookmarks for Avid Readers

Updated: Feb 28

Crafting Personalized Embossed Clay Bookmarks for Bookworms

My son is the ultimate bookworm, easily losing himself in a good story. Whether it’s the Lord of the Rings series or his favorite Five Nights at Freddy’s books, he’s always got his nose in a book. But you know what’s even better than watching him get lost in a story? Crafting with him.

Our latest project? Embossed clay bookmarks made from—believe it or not—an old mooncake plastic container! It was one of those simple ideas that turned into a lot of fun, and the look on his face when he used that bookmark for the first time was priceless.

These bookmarks are more than just a fun project—they’re practical and creative. Not only do they make cool accessories for your favorite books, but they’re also a chance to get a little creative with your own designs. In this step-by-step guide, I’ll show you how to make your own, perfect for adding a personal touch to your reading or for gifting to fellow book lovers.

Materials You'll Need:

  1. Polymer clay (in your choice of colors)

  2. Rolling pin

  3. Embossing tools (such as stamps, texture plates, or even household items like the mooncake container we found, lace or buttons)

  4. Craft knife or clay cutter

  5. Baking tray

  6. Oven

Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace

Set up a clean and spacious workspace where you can comfortably roll out your clay and work on your designs. Make sure to protect your surface with a non-stick mat or parchment paper to prevent the clay from sticking.

Step 2: Roll Out the Clay

Take your polymer clay and knead it until it's soft and pliable. Then, use a rolling pin to roll it out to your desired thickness. Aim for a thickness of around 1/8 to 1/4 inch for your bookmarks.

Step 3: Create Your Design

Once your clay is rolled out, it's time to get creative! Use your embossing tools to add texture and design to the surface of the clay. You can use stamps, texture plates, or even household items like lace or buttons to create interesting patterns and designs. Experiment with different textures and techniques to find what works best for you.

Step 4: Cut Out Your Bookmarks

After you've finished embossing your clay, use a craft knife or clay cutter to cut out your bookmarks. You can create classic rectangle shapes or get creative with fun shapes like hearts, stars, or animals. Make sure to leave a small hole at the top of each bookmark where you'll later add the ribbon or tassel.

Step 5: Bake Your Bookmarks

Preheat your oven according to the instructions on your polymer clay packaging. Place your clay bookmarks on a baking tray and bake them according to the recommended time and temperature. Keep a close eye on them to prevent over-baking.

Step 6: Add Finishing Touches

Once your bookmarks have cooled, it's time to add the finishing touches. Thread a piece of ribbon or tassel through the hole at the top of each bookmark and tie it in a knot or bow. You can also add additional embellishments like beads or charms for extra flair.

Step 7: Enjoy Your Handcrafted Creations

Now that your embossed clay bookmarks are complete, it's time to enjoy them! Use them to mark your place in your current read, give them as thoughtful gifts to fellow bookworms, or simply admire them as miniature works of art. However you choose to use them, these charming bookmarks are sure to add a touch of whimsy and creativity to your reading adventures. Happy crafting!

I hope you enjoy making these custom polymer clay bookmarks! They’re a fun and unique way to add a personal touch to your reading experience.
